The Prince Edward Island Association of Exhibitions is proud to present the “PEI Mutual Insurance Company and the PEI Association of Exhibitions 2009 Youth Talent competition”.
The program is aimed at supporting and recognizing the talent of Prince Edward Island youth talent from 13 through 21 years of age. This contest will appeal to aspiring singers, dancers, musicians and novelty acts.
The volunteers who work in the fair industry have been well aware of the tremendous pool of young talent in their own communities. Year after year, incredible young performers appear at fairs in every corner of the province.
Twenty years ago the industry decided it was time to recognize those young people who exhibit extraordinary talent and give them an opportunity to showcase their talent on a national scale.
Through the efforts of the Canadian Association of Fairs and Exhibitions, the Prince Edward Island Association of Exhibitions, and the support of the Patty Conklin Fund, the National Youth Talent Awards were born.
Today the national portion of this competition is known as the Canadian Youth Talent Competition. We are pleased to announce that PEI Mutual Insurance has increased their sponsorship, enabling the provincial finalist(s) to continue on to the Canadian National Youth Talent Competition. This sponsorship is the reason that Island Youth can travel beyond the borders of Atlantic Canada to meet and compete with “la crème de la crème” from across Canada. Time after time the provincial winner(s) come home exclaiming it has been “the experience of a lifetime” and extend high accolades to those responsible for making it possible.
To continue to grow this competition, the PEIAE requires on-going sponsorship, and we take this opportunity to acknowledge how greatly we appreciate the generosity and support of PEI Mutual Insurance www.peimutual.com.
Several previous youth talent participants who competed at the national level have moved on to careers in the entertainment industry.
Many of the young people on stage at the competitions this year are aspiring young performers. Their participation in this program is just one more step on the road to success.
Congratulations to each of you! We wish you all the best!
Youth Talent Search Coordinator for PEI
In 1975, Jean Tingley and her family moved to Prince Edward Island from Truro, Nova Scotia. At that time her children were very young and Jean made the decision to put her business career on hold until 1985. From 1985 to 1999, she and her husband Dave owned and operated Dawndale Farm Supplies, a feed manufacturing facility and retail outlet. The business allowed Jean to put her accounting and public relation skills to good use. In July 1999 they sold the business and continue to enjoy their retirement.
Jean has a long history of volunteering for her community and province particularly with the youth. She coached both girls and boys soccer and lacrosse and was a Brownie and Beaver Leader for seven years. She has been a 4-H volunteer as well as a judge for the communication and demonstration competitions. After retiring Jean began volunteering at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital and soon joined the QEH Auxiliary. Currently the president of the auxiliary, she spends approximately 25 hours a week on auxiliary related work. Never being afraid to accept a challenge, Jean committed her group to raise $800,000 to purchase a Digital Mammography for their hospital. This initiative won the group a national fundraising award in June.
Jean is a volunteer at the Crapaud Exhibition, the treasurer of the Royal Commonwealth Society, a life member and former board member of the Federated Women’s Institute of Canada and is the public relations chair for every group for which she belongs.
She was very happy to accept the volunteer role of PEI Coordinator for the Youth Talent Search. She has always been impressed with the abundance of local talent on Prince Edward Island and is thrilled to be able to work with the youth of the province and to encourage them to develop their talents by entering the competitions. Jean is looking forward to being a member of the host committee for the 2009 Canadian Youth Talent Search that will be held in Charlottetown next November.
Jean and her husband Dave are the proud parents of daughter Angela, son Dale, and grandparents to Mackenzie and Carys.
