Rules and Regulations
The Boat:
The following are the only approved materials for building the boats:
* Cardboard
* Duct Tape
* String or Rope
* Paint
* Wax
* Cloth, only to be used in the sails
* White glue
The following items are strictly prohibited:
* Styrofoam, in any shape or form
* Wood
* Metal
* Rubber
* Plastic
* Staples
*Note: You may bring questionable materials to the Boat Committee
for final approval!
Length:
* The maximum length of the boat shall be 20 feet
Propulsion:
* Paddles, for the exclusive use of rowing, must be
constructed of
materials from the above approved
materials list with the exception of the
long, handle portion of the paddle
which may be made from wood.
* The crew may use only one boat for the entire race. Repairs
are
allowed between heats; however,
the Boat Committee is allowed to inspect
and approve all repairs being
made.
* Poling / Punting (as in using long poles to push your boat)
is strictly
prohibited.
The Crew: The Crew may consist of the
following:
* One Captain (who will pilot the boat) plus one crew member.
* One Captain (who will pilot the boat) plus three crew
members.
* The Land Crew (which is separate from the sailing crew) may
have a
maximum of six people to help get the boat into the water
Safety:
* Note: NO ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES BEFORE OR
DURING THE RACES WILL BE PERMITTED - NO
EXCEPTIONS!!
* Life jackets or PFD's must be worn by all participants and
will be
supplied by the organizers. These
must be returned immediately following
each heat.
* Footwear must be worn by all those entering the water.
* There will be lifeguards and security personnel at the
event and it is
important that all participants
give them their full cooperation.
Race
Procedures:
* The race format will determined by the number of entries received.
* Boats will be lowered into the water by the crew and will wait at the
starting line until the start
signal is given.
* At the end of the races, each crew must dispose of it's boat and any
pieces that have broken off in the
water.
Judging:
* All decisions of the Boat Committee and Judges are Final.
* Boats are to be judged on design, appearance, apparent
sea-worthiness, and originality.
The appearance category can include
consideration for costumes worn by
the crew.
* If any participants are interested in displaying their
boats prior to the
boat race, please advise organizers and arrangements can be made.
Prizes:
* Trophies and prizes will be awarded to winners in each
category.
